WP-DC9 Waterproof Housing
Testing my new Canon SD800 IS in the WP-DC9 Waterproof Housing.
I've noted a few (apparent) internal reflections, and you can clearly see where the lens port gets in the way of the built-in flash. Canon includes a flash diffuser attachment that does a pretty great job. Not good enough to save that cat shot from the classic wide-angle CU flash problem.
All of these shots are at the wide extreme of the lens. The barrel effect is the SD800's lens, working its heart out (i.e. not the housing). I figured having the wide coverage was where I wanted to be for this camera. At 7.1 MP, I can probably do the barrel correction in PS if it becomes important some time. Again, I'm targeting this camera for travel and snapshots, not serious work.
I had to flood the house up to the attic level (2nd-story ceiling!) to get the underwater shots of the hallway and the bathroom. The cat drowned moments later. ;)
Seriously, the last two shots are underwater in the sink. I did test the housing for 4 minutes in a bucket of water before I put the camera in the first time. Canon includes silicone grease for the seal for when I use the case for real. A little scary: there's a lot that can go wrong with the seal, and it wears, too. You can't really know when it'll go before it does - with your camera in there! Canon recommends annual replacement of the seal. Also says not to store the housing in a hot car because thermal expansion/contraction/warpage can ruin the case.
I've found a small Denali bag for the WP housing, the camera, charger, accessories. Will get a shot of the SD800 in the housing next time it's dry.
